THE PRACTICE OF CREATIVITY

9/5/12

New Writing Practice Circle Begins Monday October 8, 2012

When the mind is shapely,
your writing will be shapely
(Allen Ginsberg)

Natalie Goldberg explains in Writing Down the Bones that this teaching from Allen Ginsberg sparked her inspired for her best-selling book about "writing practice."

I attended a workshop with NG in 1991 at The Open Center in New York, followed by a small weekly writing group for one year. I have continued to use writing practice--alone and with others.

A diary is more of a way to cultivate self-awareness by capturing ruminations about emotions and situations. Literature, poetry, and journalism involve crafting words and ideas into structured essay, story, poem, play, or novel.

Writing practice is an excellent springboard into all those other forms, but the only agenda in writing practice is the process of moving pen in hand across the notebook. It's a way to connect with the workings of your mind. Writing practice with others also offers a chance to listen and be listened to as writing is shared.

Timed exercises are designed to allow freshness of mind to settle into words on the page. Writing with a group provides a chance to read aloud and listen to others.  No prior experience is required.

The Writing Practice Circle is for anyone who wishes to explore writing with a small group in a fun and casual atmosphere.

Healing as a Creative Process

HealIng as a CreatIve Process (Creativity as a Healing Process)
September 5, 11, 18
7:30-9:00

Living artfully is an ongoing discovery of inner gifts. Creativity is often abandoned along the way as paid employment and family obligations become a priority. Making art involves productivity along with the personal transformation that comes from mining the treasures within.

Whatever your artistic path (painting, writing, music, dance), the alchemical process of moving towards mature creativity is the same. This workshop is for anyone who would like to recover and restore your artist self to health by undertaking a kind of pilgrimage.

The workshop introduces tools and exercises from Julia Cameron’s methods found in “The Artist’s Way” and “The Vein of Gold.” As most of this personal work will be done individually on your own time, the weekly meetings will serve as a guide and support for those wanting to engage in this process.
